Procopio’s Life Sciences practice has two new leaders with decades of experience serving industry clients with intellectual property and corporate law services. Award-winning attorneys Xiaofan “Frank” Yang and Helen Goldstein take over the reins of a growing practice with an extensive array of clients. Frank is a Ph.D. chemist who provides comprehensive IP strategic counseling to public and private biotechnology, pharmaceutical, digital health and medical device companies. Helen represents life sciences and other industry clients with a variety of corporate law matters, including mergers & acquisitions, corporate governance, technology transactions and licensing, and commercial contracting. They also assume leadership of Procopio’s Technology Transactions and Licensing practice.

Attorneys in Procopio’s Life Sciences practice bring decades of law firm and in-house counsel experience, from life-saving pharmaceuticals to breakthrough biotechnologies. Representing emerging and mature companies, they provide innovators in biologics, genomic, diagnostic, e-health, digital health technologies and other life sciences companies a full suite of legal services including corporate formation, financing and venture capital, M&A, IP counseling, strategy and litigation, licensing, privacy and cybersecurity, employment and real estate.

Frank’s patent counseling and prosecution experience creates and protects IP assets as primary value propositions for growth enterprises in all stages of business, from proof of concept to clinical development, regulatory approval and product launch. Frank is also experienced in conducting due diligence in complex venture financings, public offerings, partnering/licensing transactions, and mergers and acquisitions. He has a global client base, including companies and investors in U.S., Europe, and Asia. After obtaining his B.S. in polymer chemistry and Ph.D. in organic synthesis, Frank worked as a medicinal chemist in the pharmaceutical industry for more than four years before becoming a patent practitioner in 2006. A member of the IAM Patent 1000 and named a 2023 Leader of Influence in Life Sciences by the San Diego Business Journal, he is a member of the firm’s Management Committee.

Helen advises companies from their earliest stages in which intellectual property protection and regulatory compliance are critical to success. Helen works closely with attorneys across the firm’s practices to ensure smooth transactions for her clients, bringing project management experience and a reputation for developing “out of the box” solutions to novel challenges.
