Overview
Brent focuses on intellectual property matters including patent prosecution, generating and managing portfolios in life sciences and other chemistry and material-based sciences. His experience includes post grant proceedings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board, IP due diligence, and IP import/export issues. Brent counsels life sciences and medical device industry clients in a wide range of areas including pharmaceutical and chemistry-related technologies. He began his IP career at Allergan, where he managed patent portfolios for pharmaceutical products representing approximately $1 billion in annual sales, such as Lumigan®, Alphagan®, Combigan®, and Restasis®. Brent worked as a research chemist prior to his legal career.
Brent’s technical expertise includes pharmaceuticals, ophthalmics, drug delivery systems, prostaglandins, retinoids, alpha adrenergics, cannabinoids, organophosphorous compounds, NSAIDS, steroids, cyclodextrins, cyclosporins, opioids, neurotoxins, semiconductors, photocatalysts, light-emitting materials, charge transport materials, ceramics, graphenes, polymers, coatings, adhesives, surfactants, halocarbons and rocket fuels.
- Secured multiple patents for a new FDA-approved therapy for the treatment of depression.
- Secured a patent for chemical compounds that inhibit retroviruses such as HIV for a nonprofit and a federal agency.
- Secured a patent for compounds useful for medicaments treating diseases that are responsive to treatment by agonists of alpha2 adrenergic receptors on behalf of a major pharmaceutical company.
- Secured a patent for compositions intended for topical ophthalmic delivery and a method of treatment to address glaucoma and associated conditions for a major pharmaceutical company.
- Secured a patent for matrices of polymer networks and dispersed phases of particulate and/or fibrous materials well designed for use in load bearing applications such as building materials for a building products company.
