As a member of the Management Committee and a partner on the intellectual property team, Steve maintains an active intellectual property law practice, with a particular emphasis on U.S. and foreign patent protection in a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, computer, and biotechnology areas including medical devices and implants, biotechnology instruments, consumer electronics, exercise equipment, fuel cells, electric and hybrid-electric drive systems, wireless communications, telematics, biometrics, video and audio streaming, musical instruments, children's products, sequencing equipment, detection systems, and manufacturing systems and methods. Mr. Beuerle also has extensive experience with U.S. and foreign trademark prosecution, copyright prosecution, intellectual property due diligence, licensing, and the preparation of intellectual property legal opinions. Mr. Beuerle also has extensive experience working with companies from the Far East, especially China and Japan, in protecting their intellectual property in the United States. Before joining Procopio, Mr. Beuerle was an attorney at both Lyon & Lyon LLP and Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear LLP.
Representative Matters
- Prepared and prosecuted numerous United States patent applications for Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki Kaisha of Shizuoka, Japan
- Successfully prosecuted and obtained the "Worm Light" patent related to the number one selling video game accessory in the world, Nyko Technologies' Worm Light for Nintendo's Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance handheld video game systems
- Represented Boston Scientific in intellectual property due diligence of Cardiac Pathways for Boston Scientific acquisition of Cardiac Pathways
- Successfully reacquired numerous stolen domain names for clients
- Negotiated and prepared numerous income-generating licenses for clients in the medical device and music industries
- Obtained hundreds of patents and registered trademarks for clients in a wide variety of industries
Education, Distinctions & Community Involvement
Mr. Beuerle received his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1992. He graduated in 1995 from the John Marshall Law School, a law school specializing in intellectual property law, where he was president of the Intellectual Property Law Society. Mr. Beuerle is admitted to practice before the State Bar of California, and is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is also licensed to practice before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Federal District Courts for the Southern and Central Districts of California. Mr. Beuerle is a member of BIOCOM’s Medical Device and Diagnostic Committee. He also is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association, and the San Diego County Bar Association. Mr. Beuerle also volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County and for the Serving Seniors Program of Senior Community Centers.
